The kids have been using Tumblebooks, a reading program, at school for our "Listen to Reading" time during the reading block. They know how to access the site from a home computer, and we now have confirmation that it will work on iPads as well! If you go to the "Student Links" page on this site, you can find a link to Tumblebooks in our Reading Games section. Remember, the username is wdstu, and the password is books. From an iPad, after you enter the username and password, press "SUBMIT" (not GO). Next, in the same area (upper right corner), you can 'CHOOSE' iPad. It is possible that "English" will be in the choice box, but scroll down, and iPad should be an option. While we are on the topic of iPads and tablets, we have been meaning to reach out to all of you for some help. :-) We would love your input/reviews of any apps you have purchased/found for reading or math. PLEASE HELP US BY COMMENTING ON THIS BLOG ENTRY WITH READING OR MATH APPS YOU HAVE FOUND TO BE HELPFUL AND/OR FUN FOR YOUR CHILD, AND CHECK BACK EVERY SO OFTEN TO SEE WHAT HAS BEEN ADDED. Our hope is that keeping them all in the comment section will provide parents with a spot to check out if they are looking for some new learning applications. Additionally, it will help us because we are lucky enough to have 4 student iPads in our classroom, and with your input, we may be able to get new apps added to the room iPads for the kids. Thanks in advance for your assistance!

Dear Parents and Guardians, Every day after recess, the children write reminders and/or important information in their planners for you to see. We encourage the children to take responsibility for showing you their planner each evening, but as they are still learning the routine, please find a way to help make it a habit in your home. Our homework routine is as follows: Mondays: Reading Fluency Practice (the story comes home in an "Arthur Envelope" that the homework helper should sign and return). *Please keep the story and send the envelope back empty each week. The kids should occasionally re-read the stories aloud to help continue to build their oral reading fluency. Tuesdays: Red Folder Sight Word Practice This folder is not due back until Friday, so feel free to keep it and practice throughout the week until your child can read all the words with ease. Once they can fluently read the words, please sign and date the red folder and return it to school. Wednesdays: Math Homework Our math homework is practice work related to our whole-class math lessons. Thursdays: Math Homework Our math homework is practice work related to our whole-class math lessons. Fridays: New Words Their Way (SPELLING) Words The children should focus on sorting the words and learning the different spelling patterns to best prepare for our assessments. *Lists will only come home for upcoming five-day weeks. Picture it, moms and dads...You are a first grade student at Woodland Elementary. You have been waiting all morning for recess. The lunchroom ESPs have dismissed you from the cafeteria, and this is the scene: With all that is going on around you, you still manage to find your way to your locker. Now...do YOU know which snowpants are yours?? Please help your child pass the test by clearly labeling all of his or her winter gear. We have even seen parents use puffy fabric paint to write their children's initials on the heels of their boots! So many items are lost on a daily basis in a school of our size, and labeling items will make it so much easier to get things back to their owners. Thank you for your help! ***An important message/request from the Woodland Office: Please put student’s names on all winter apparel, lunch boxes, and hooded sweatshirts. Also please ask your children to be more responsible with their belongings. Responsibility is one of our Eagle Pride Pillars! We will put out all lost and found items on tables the last week before winter break so parents who are in the building for parties, waffle breakfast, or the sing-a-long can look at what we have collected. Anything left will be donated.
